How to calculate net run rate in cricket

Net Run Rate is the difference between a team's scoring rate and the scoring rate it allows opponents. Add the runs and legal balls from every relevant match before calculating the two rates. Do not treat 14.3 overs as 14.3 decimal overs: it means 14 overs and 3 balls, or 14.5 overs in decimal form.

NRR = (total runs scored ÷ total overs faced) − (total runs conceded ÷ total overs bowled).

The all-out rule

When a team is bowled out before using its full allocation, tournament rules commonly calculate that innings using the full allocation of overs for NRR. For example, a side all out in 16.2 overs of a 20-over match is treated as having faced 20 overs. Always follow your competition's playing conditions if they differ.

Quick example

If a team scores 160 from 20 overs and concedes 140 from 20 overs, its NRR for that match is (160 ÷ 20) − (140 ÷ 20) = +1.000. For a league table, use the combined totals from every match rather than averaging the individual NRR figures.
